In 2003, the Westfield Police Department, through several donations, was able to start an ATV unit. The department started with two, but now has four ATV’s at its disposal. This unit has been able to drastically cut down on illegal ATV use. Although most riders have no intention of doing damage or harm, riding ATV’s in unauthorized areas, such as adjacent to railroad tracks, can be dangerous and cause thousands of dollars in damage. The ATV unit has also been invaluable in search and rescue by making police able to reach areas which would be inaccessible to traditional police vehicles. For more information on ATV laws and areas where you may ride, please visit the Commonwealth’s web site.
